Amazing world largest diesel engine

Posted by fullfree

This thing is described as the "Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine". Shown above is the engine block and the main shaft, and if you count, you'll find it's a 10 cylinder engine. Built by The Aioi Works of Japan's Diesel United, Ltd.

That means this images are not of the very largest engine, because they have a 14 cylinder version. But you get the idea, just mulitply by 1.4.

The cylinder deck. Each cylinder displaces 1820 liters. Think about this for a moment. When you hear displacement numbers for cars, it's generally in cc. That's a cubic centimeter, otherwise known as a milliliter.

The displacement of all four cylinders of a 1992 Subaru Impreza is 1820 cc. That is 1/1000th of the displacement of one cylinder of this engine.
So a 14-cylinder completed engine has a displacement 14,000 times that of a 1992 Subaru. What do they use this engine for? According to that one page that documents it all...

...to move Subarus! The big engines go on very large container ships, such as the ones used to get cars across the seas. Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design, and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them.

Even if you’re the most jaded diesel freak, here are some numbers about the RTA96-C14 that will make your eyes pop:

No. of Cylinders: 14
Height: 44 feet
Length: 89 feet
Weight: 2,300 tons
Crankshaft Weight: 300 tons.
Cylinder Bore: 38 inches.
Stoke: 98+ inches.
Individual Cylinder Displacement: 111,143 inches (1820 liters)
Horsepower: 7,790 hp (per cylinder)
Maximum Power Output (at 102 rpm): 108,920 hp.
Thermal Efficiency: More than 50% (!)
Diametral Cylinder Liner Wear Rate: 0.03 mm/1000 hours (very low)
Fuel Consumption at Maximum Economy: 0.260 lbs/hp/hour

The RTA96-C14 also comes in models featuring six to 12 cylinders. Sixteen and 18 cylinder versions are also on the drawing board.

Amazing The Millau Viaduct bridge

Posted by fullfree

The Millau Viaduct is a large cable-stayed road bridge that spans the valley of the river Tarn near Millau in the Massif Central mountain range in southern France. Designed by the structural engineer Michel Virlogeux and architect Norman Foster, at 2.4km long, and 270m above the river at its highest point, it is the tallest vehicular bridge in the world. An interesting fact is that the Millau Viaduct is not straight. The bridge was built with a slight curve that has a radius of 20km. Such a high straight road could induce a sensation of floating for drivers, which is remedied by the curve.

Spanning almost 2.5km across the River Tarn in the South of France, the Millau Viaduct is set to become the world’s highest bridge. Designed by the architect Lord Norman Foster, the six-lane cable-stay bridge is 19m taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
Supported by two anchorage points at either side and seven piers supporting the carriageway, the bridge will soar across the Tarn valley at a central height of 245m. The project has consumed 19,000 tons of concrete-reinforcing steel, 5,000 tons of reinforcing steel for cables and 85,000 cubic meters of concrete - enough to fill London’s Albert Hall.

Amazing facts about stephen hawking

Stephen William Hawking, a Completely paralyzed person who is unable to talk and move since years is now known is one of the world’s greatest physicists. He communicates through a machine device called Speech Generating Device (SGDs) or Voice Output Communication Aids, in fact, he has written a book and many research papers  using this device. It’s unbelievable to know about his  achievements that includes black holes and many other theories. Lets talk about some amazing and interesting facts about Stephen Hawking along with a short introduction.

Introduction:

Name: Stephen William Hawking

Born: 8 January 1942 in Oxford, England

Age: 70 Years

Major Fields: Mathematics, Theoretical physics

Major Achievements: Black holes, Hawking radiation, Quantum gravity

Major Awards: Albert Einstein Award, Wolf Prize, Presidential Medal of Freedom

Some amazing facts about Stephen Hawking:

1. Stephen Hawking born on 8th January, 1942 exactly after 300 years of Galileo’s death and everyone know about their explorations in space.

2. Now a days, Stephen Hawking is known as the greatest physicist of current era but did you know he was a below average student when he was 9. Yes guys, he ranked as the worst student of the class but still his teachers used to think that he is a genius and will shock the world with his talent in future. By the Way, his nickname was “Einstein”.

3. Before his illness, he was one of the most important members of Oxford Rowing Team. His dedication and perfection made him very popular and he was called as “the adventurous type” by one of his fellow boatman.

4. When he was 21, he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and according to the doctors he could just live for a few years but amazingly he is  still alive in the age of 70.

5. Although Stephen Hawking is completely paralyzed but he still can communicate with the help of a Speech Generating Device. He can speak up to 15 words per minute. Using the same device, he has written a book named “George’s Secret Key to the Universe” and dozens of scientific papers. He also appeared in some TV Shows.

Einstein thought of and Hawking developed the idea of black holes. They are collapsed objects, such as stars, that have become invisible.

Hawking’s contributions to the study of gravity are considered to be the most important since Einstein’s.

More than anyone else, Hawking has developed the idea of black holes — points in space where gravity becomes so extreme that it even sucks in light.

Stephen hawking is an example for everyone  as his disability failed to stop him from exploring the hidden secrets of the world
