1. World War 1 was a military conflict which started in 1914 and ended in 1918. World War 1 involved nearly all the biggest powers of the world.

2. World War 1 involved 2 opposing alliances – the Allies and the Central Powers

3. Countries which were considered under Allies were Russia, France, British Empire, Italy, United States, Japan, Rumania, Serbia, Belgium, Greece, Portugal and Montenegro

4. Countries which were considered under Central Powers were Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and Bulgaria

5. World War 1 was started on 28 June 1914 by the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his pregnant wife Sophie

6. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was in relation with Emperor Franz Josef and heir to the throne of Austria and Hungary. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was the nephew of Emperor Franz Josef and heir to the throne of Austria and Hungary

7. The assassination took place in in Sarajevo, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia and Herzegovina

* Countries were building their military forces, arms and battleships
* Countries wanted to regain lost territories from previous conflicts and build empires
* Moroccan Crisis – Germans were protesting in 1911 against the French possession of Morocco
